Autumn Holiday Tips
A new adventure awaits around every corner, day and night, indoors and outdoors. Below you will find some tips on the many things you can do in Åre during the autumn holidays for the whole family. Also keep an eye on our events page and our calendar for major events and daily activities.
Snow!
There are no guarantees but, usually, October offers the first snowfall of the year. Make sure to pack your beanie, mittens, warm clothes and sturdy shoes so you can make it to higher altitudes and have a proper snowball fight, go sledding or make snow angels.
Not Touching the Ground
On the Holiday Club seaside there’s an obstacle course for kids (age regardless) with a “not touching the ground” theme. It’s a fund challenge for the whole family and if you feel like a work out while you’re at it, there’s an outdoor gym right next to the course.
Eat Outdoors
In the Wilderness Camp there’s a barbecue area where the wood storage is full and the camp fires are lit all through the day. Bring your own packed lunch or buy hamburgers, hot dogs, chocolate bananas or cinnamon apples to cook over an open fire. If you’ll rather find your own special spot there are barbecue areas along, for example, Åre beach promenade, at the marina and in Björnen. Want a recipe tip for outdoor cooking? Check this out.
Chase the Northern Lights
If you’re lucky, you might see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). The season for seeing this magical natural phenomenon begins in October when dark, clear nights sets in. There are, of course, people who keep track of when the conditions are just right, so keep an eye out on the right forums, or book a safari which includes a guided tour and more. Read more on how to spot the Aurora Borealis here.
Visit a Waterfall
You know Ronja the Robber’s Daughter? Her waterfall, Glupafallet, exists in real life and is located close to Åre village. It’s called Ristafallet and makes a great excursion, especially as there are trails and paths that makes it easy to explore its surroundings. If bigger really is better, Sweden’s largest waterfall Tännforsen is well worth a visit, as are the other beautiful waterfalls in and around Åre.
Release Your Inner Child
Bounce around on the trampolines, land a 360, try the zipline, climb, fight your way through the Ninja Course or try the game Valo. JumpYard has something for most kids, regardless of age. For a quieter but not less demanding challenge, Åre Climbing Hall (Åre klätterhall) in Duved is the place for you. Located in Åre Sportcenter, it offers bouldering and rope climbing.
Hit Some Balls & Make a Day of it
Speaking of Åre Sportcenter: There are many other activities to choose from besides climbing. Why not get some cardio done while having fun with padel, tennis or pickleball? Or go to the gym or practice your golf swing and, preferably before you get hangry, visit the café for sustenance.
Experience the Art of Glass Blowing
Experience the beautiful art of glass blowing at Åre Glashytta where new shapes and designs are made on site. The furnace burns all day long and you’ll be able to pick up something truly unique. You’ll find the combined shop and workshop in Duved’s station house.
Experience the Cross-Country Premiere
Usually, Vålådalen prepare their cross-country trails each day during the autumn holidays. Ski on last year’s snow, which has been kept for an early premiere, and, if you’re lucky the Swedish National Cross-Country Ski Team is on site (check out the best skiers in the world for tips on technique). When you’re done for the day, have a lunch in the Mountain Station’s restaurant.
Visit a Real Chocolate Factory
It’s not quite Willy Wonka’s, but it’s close enough: Åre Chokladfabrik a real chocolate factory filled to the brim with creative, edible creations. Visit the factory on site in Björnänge and endulge your senses in the sweet smells and tastes. Try the well-known and handmade pralines and everything else on offer and take it home with you. And there’s a café nearby – yum.
Explore the Heights
SkiStar’s Climbing Park in Björnen is perfect for challenging yourself, your friends and/or your family. Feel the adrenaline pumping, conquer your fear of heights and find the smartest ways of making it through the courses.
Make & Buy Candles
There are plenty of local workshops and producers of various products in and around Åre, and Åre Ljusfabrik (Åre Candle Factory) is one. See the beautiful creations being made and try making them yourself (available certain times of the day).
Library Hang-Out
Take a proper break from all the activities and make a visit to the library at Åre Station. Grab a book, or two, and a comfortable chair and snuggle up on your own or with a good reading companion.
Drink Hot Chocolate
This is a must, especially on colder days, but works just as well at any time. All cafés in Åre have them with different types of topping, like whipped cream and marshmallows, and it’s not just for kids.
More Activities & Fun for the whole Family
