Sometimes, the best way to experience \u00c5re is simply to slow down.
While epic mountain hikes have their place, some days call for an easy stroll instead. These scenic walks around \u00c5re offer beautiful views and memorable moments in every season, making it easy to get outside without committing to a full-day adventure. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From \u00c5re square to Tott Hotel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a>
Begin your route from \u00c5re torg. Walk uphill along Stationsv\u00e4gen towards the E14 (the European highway). As Stationsv\u00e4gen turns right after just a couple of hundred meters, there\u2019s a tunnel<\/a> under the E14 on your left. Walk through the tunnel, cross Tottv\u00e4gen and take the path through the woods where there\u2019s a bridge crossing Susab\u00e4cken (Susa River). Continue until you reach the massive Tott Hotel (it\u2019s hard to miss).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From here, you can continue along Trollstigen, through the pine forest until you reach Fj\u00e4llg\u00e5rden. Another option is to turn right at Tott Hotel and walk downhill along Kurortsv\u00e4gen until it meets \u00c5rev\u00e4gen which will take you back to \u00c5re centre. A third option is to walk eastwards from Tott Hotel and follow the gravel road through beautiful Tottens by<\/a> (see below). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tottens by<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a><\/strong>
Tottens by (The Tott Village) is one of the original three hamlets that merged into \u00c5re Village and still looks a bit like it did generations ago. Walking through is well worth your time, for the historic experience and for the magnificent view.

Start at Tott Hotel and walk eastwards along the gravel road Tottens by, below Totthummeln<\/a>. When you reach the brook, you can turn around or continue along Totthyllan and turn back to \u00c5re centre via Granlidsv\u00e4gen, Tottebov\u00e4gen and Kurortsv\u00e4gen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beach promenade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a><\/strong>
The beach promenade along Lake \u00c5resj\u00f6n makes for a beautiful stroll<\/a>. Start at the Marina<\/a> (click the link above to find it), on the lakeside of the railroad bridge next to Coop and Systembolaget and follow the promenade westwards. Stop along one of the small beaches and dip your toes or just continue until you\u2019ve passed Holiday Club. On the opposite side of Holiday Club, there\u2019s an elevated railroad crossing you may use to get back to \u00c5re Centre. <\/p>\n\n\n

Karl Johans v\u00e4g<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a short walk but makes a nice detour through a lovely residential area all year round. Coming from \u00c5re Square, walk towards \u00c5re\u2019s Old Church and make a left turn after passing the parish house St Olavsg\u00e5rden. Make a right turn and follow Kurortsv\u00e4gen for about 100 metres and turn right again, onto Karl Johan\u2019s v\u00e4g (road). The road connects to \u00c5rev\u00e4gen so to get back to \u00c5re centre, make a right after the last house and head back, or just turn around and walk back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bergbanesv\u00e4ngen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Funicular valley station<\/a> (\u00c5re Bergbana) is at \u00c5re Square, so that\u2019s where to begin this stroll. Pass on the right hand side of the Funicular station and take the gravel road passing between the Broken Restaurant and the Funicular tracks. Walk upwards, pass Hotel Granen and continue until you reach Tott Hotel. You\u2019ll see some of \u00c5re\u2019s most interesting old buildings along this way, such as Villa \u00c5rebo. Cross the bridge on the hillside of Tott Hotel and choose which route to take to get back to \u00c5re centre (see From \u00c5re Square to Tott Hotel<\/em> above). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

St Olavsleden \u2013 The pilgrim trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

FIND IT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

St Olavsleden<\/a> is a well-known pilgrimage from Sel\u00e5nger in the East to Trondheim in the West. Pilgrims, wanting to visit the grave of the Saint Olav den helige, have traveled along this route for millennia. The entire route is 564 kilometers so it\u2019s a bit of a walk, but, needless to say, you needn\u2019t walk the entire route. Start at \u00c5re\u2019s Old Church and walk along St Olavs v\u00e4g which changes into \u00c5rev\u00e4gen and continue westwards, for as long as you like. A good place to end is Tegeforsen<\/a> where you can have a break before heading back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
