But longer treks in tougher conditions call for better preparation \u2013 both in terms of what you wear and what you pack. Sure, you could stock up on the entire outdoor shop, but here we focus on the essentials, along with a few tips to help you get ready for your walk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good to know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The weather<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep \u2013 it can shift quickly and dramatically, whatever the season. Check the forecast on SMHI, Yr, Klart, or similar services, and prepare both for what\u2019s expected and for sudden changes. See our clothing tips below for what to carry in your backpack.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: If you\u2019re new to hiking or unsure about conditions, it\u2019s best to avoid exposed mountain terrain on windy, rainy days. Instead, stick to forest trails \u2013 they\u2019re easier to follow and offer more shelter from the elements. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety first<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping an eye on the weather (as mentioned above) is key, but there are a few more things to bear in mind \u2013 especially for longer hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No matter the distance: make a route plan and let someone know where you\u2019re going and when you expect to be back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the condition of the trail before you set off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring a fully charged phone and ensure you have coverage. A power bank is always a smart idea. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For longer outings, consider a satellite communicator (like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garmin.com\/sv-SE\/c\/outdoor-recreation\/satellite-communicators\/\">InReach<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update and bring your first aid kit \u2013 even for things like blisters or minor cuts. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re sticking to marked trails near \u00c5reskutan, it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll get lost \u2013 and if you do, it\u2019s usually easy to find your way back. In the highlands, you can often drink straight from streams, but not always. Always fill your water bottle before setting out, whether it\u2019s a short, gentle walk or a longer hike.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid still water unless it\u2019s from a large lake. Don\u2019t drink from streams where people swim or near mountain stations and accommodation areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re heading out on a longer hike: check the map in advance for water sources. You can also use water purification tablets or filters to lower the risk of getting an upset stomach. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outdoor meals <\/strong>also taste amazing, so no matter the distance, we strongly recommend packing some food. It can be anything from simple sandwiches to freeze-dried meals or a full picnic with your favourite treats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always bring some extra energy \u2013 bars, trail mix or similar \u2013 regardless of how short the hike is. You might be out longer than expected, or your blood sugar might drop and you\u2019ll be glad to have a boost. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For longer hikes: plan how much food you\u2019ll need, how much it weighs, and remember that you\u2019ll burn more calories than usual when hiking. That said, trails can be wet and rocky in places, so shoes with a sturdy sole and a secure fit are always recommended. Red and black trails are more challenging, with rougher and rockier terrain \u2013 in those cases, proper hiking or trail shoes, or boots, are your best bet for stability and ankle support.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t wear shoes that are too tight. Feet tend to swell during long walks, and on downhill sections, your toes may hit the front of your shoes if they\u2019re too short \u2013 hello sore toes and bruised nails. This applies to both regular walking shoes and boots.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wool socks are a hiker\u2019s best friend \u2013 they keep your feet warm in the cold and cool in the heat, even when damp. Choose a thinner pair in warmer weather and thicker ones when it\u2019s colder.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wearing two pairs of socks helps prevent blisters!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you plan to hike regularly or tackle more demanding routes, go for high-cut hiking boots. If you\u2019re heading up \u00c5reskutan, check the latest weather updates via the SkiStar app or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skistar.com\/en\/ski-destinations\/are\/summer-in-are\/lifts-weather\/?tab=104434\">website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trail tips from the locals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiking trousers are designed for purpose \u2013 with features like ventilation, reinforced seat and knees, and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightweight, breathable shirts are great in summer and offer protection from insect bites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Base layers aren\u2019t just for winter \u2013 thin wool regulates temperature well, keeping you cool when it\u2019s hot and warm when it\u2019s chilly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most important of all: comfort. If you suspect your jeans will chafe, choose softer trousers. If you get sweaty during the hike, it\u2019s nice to be able to change when you take a break \u2013 so you don\u2019t start feeling chilled. Your needs may also change throughout the day, so it\u2019s handy to be able to add or remove layers as you go.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fuel up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Around \u00c5reskutan you\u2019ll find <a href=\"\/en\/eat-and-drink\/cafe\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"95\">caf\u00e9s<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/eat-and-drink\/restaurants\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"99\">restaurants<\/a> that make for excellent (and delicious) pit stops.
