All trails that are part of \u00c5re\u2019s trail system <\/a>open officially around Midsummer and stay open until the end of September. The dates might vary as the weather usually decides whether they can be opened and kept open or not. The first snow usually falls in October and the snow may stay, at least at higher altitudes. We may also expect more rain than during other times of the year and as temperatures drop, the ground will be wetter than in the summer. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the trails and nature in general is extra sensitive to wear and tear and while we wish to make the most of the last part of the hiking season, this is also a time of year when preparations for the coming winter season is in full swing. Therefore, some trail signs are taken down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of precipitation may also mean that other trails may need to be closed earlier than planned. With that said, there are still plenty of opportunities for hiking in and around \u00c5re in October and if you wish to explore more options, please visit \u00c5re Trails.<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Trollstigen \u2013 Trail 212<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a nice hike for big and small that takes you through old pine forests, along rivers of water and along the path, there are little hidden gems to look out for. There are legends from \u00c5redalen to be learned, hideouts to explore and trolls and goblins to scare off. The trail starts from \u00c5re square (you\u2019ll see a sign next to the funicular\u2019s station). After approx 100 metres, turn left and when you reach Timmerstugan you\u2019ll see the signs to the right which points you through the forest towards Fj\u00e4llg\u00e5rden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Tegeforsen falls \u2013 Trail 218<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is an easy walk to the Tegeforsen waterfall. Start at \u00c5re torg and walk westwards along \u00c5rev\u00e4gen. When you reach Sotargr\u00e4nd, make a left turn and continue along the gravel road until you reach the Tegeforsen resting area where there\u2019s a wind shelter and a barbecue area. Please make sure you bring everything with you and that the fire is put out when you leave. Map and more info <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Fr\u00f6\u00e5tj\u00e4rn tarn \u2013 Trail 221<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After circa 20 minutes of walking on gravel, starting in Bj\u00f6rnen along trail 221<\/a>, you will find easy access to the mountain tarn called Fr\u00f6\u00e5tj\u00e4rn which offers wonderful views all round, especially of Mt. \u00c5reskutan. There\u2019s a public barbecue area along its shore and there\u2019s always the chance to go for a swim (please note, it might be cold). This stretch of trail 221 is a share the trail which means you share the space with cyclists, riders, prams etcetera, so keep your eyes open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Byxtj\u00e4rn tarn \u2013 Trail 221<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a popular day hike for big and small hikers alike. This is an easier mountainous hike which starts at Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva mining area and ends at the tarn Byxtj\u00e4rn which sports a great view in all directions, not least of Mt. \u00c5reskutan. It takes circa one hour along trail 221<\/a> to complete along a trail taking you through old pine forests, along fast running water and bogs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva \u2013 Trail 221<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is an easy hike along trail 221<\/a> which takes about one hour. It starts at Bj\u00f6rnen\u2019s trail centre and takes you past Fr\u00f6\u00e5tj\u00e4rn to the historic copper mining area called Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva. This stretch of the trail is a share the trail which means that cyclists, horses, prams, etcetera are allowed. At Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva, you can take shorter historic walks to explore the area and there\u2019s a wind protected area cooking your food over a fire. If you don\u2019t wish to walk the entire stretch, there\u2019s a parking at Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva which allows you to explore the area without hiking from Bj\u00f6rnen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Torprundan \u2013 Trail 224<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Explore the forest and walk along open fields and bogs while enjoying an absolutely splendid view of \u00c5reskutan. There are signs along the trail that tell stories from the mine and the area around it. About halfway, you can choose to take the shorter way, trail 224 B (Korta Torprundan) which is a shortcut back to the start at Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva. At Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva, you can take shorter historic walks to explore the area and there\u2019s a wind protected area for making a fire and cooking your food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Husesyn: Historic Houses \u2013 Trail 231 & 231b<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a family-friendly walk in and around \u00c5re centre, starting at \u00c5re Square. Most of the trail is on asphalt and along gravel roads that takes you to \u00c5re\u2019s historic houses and buildings. The Husesyn trail is accessible via \u00c5re Trails and you may complete your experience by bringing the Husesyn pamphlet, where you can read stories and anecdotes from each site, with you. You can pick up the pamphlet at \u00c5re library, located in \u00c5re Station House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longer trail, 231b<\/a>, takes from one to two hours to complete, and the shorter version, 231, takes from half an hour to an hour. <\/p>\n\n\n
