Spring winter: the fifth season in the Swedish mountains, or \"v\u00e5rvintern\" as we say in Sweden, might be the best season of the year. Here are 7 tips for how to best enjoy spring winter in \u00c5re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Spring skiing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There\u2019s a moment in the season when skiing takes on a whole new feel. The snow softens, the sun adds warmth, and the terrain becomes smooth and forgiving. That\u2019s slush skiing\u2014and yes, it\u2019s every bit as good as it sounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Slush is the mountain\u2019s version of sorbet. Soft, playful, and surprisingly fun. Your skis sink in just enough, turns become rounder, and everything feels effortless. You can push through the snow in a completely different way than in midwinter, working with the terrain instead of against it. For many, it\u2019s the most enjoyable skiing of the season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The best part? You don\u2019t have to search far. Slush isn\u2019t just found on the backside of \u00c5reskutan (though it\u2019s a great place to start) \u2014 it shows up all over the mountain when the conditions line up. Head out, feel it out, and suddenly you\u2019re there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Slush skiing might not be something you plan down to the minute \u2014 but it\u2019s definitely something to look forward to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you\u2019re heading to the backside with a group, wrap up the day with apr\u00e8s-ski at Skiers H\u00fctte<\/a>. Here, a touch of Switzerland meets \u00c5re, with cheese fondue, great wine, a cozy alpine vibe, and a sunny terrace out on the mountain\u2014 perfect when your legs are tired and you\u2019re ready to refuel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Waffles and coffee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There is nothing like a well-deserved coffee break and a tasty waffle after a good ride. There are plenty of slope side restaurants<\/a> with large sun facing verandas throughout the ski system. If you wish to make a longer tour of it, strap your cross-country or ski touring skis on and visit Lill\u00e5stugans V\u00e5ffelbruk<\/a> in Ull\u00e5dalen, Bergstugan<\/a> at Fr\u00f6\u00e5 Gruva or Vita Renen<\/a> in Renfj\u00e4llet. <\/p>\n\n\n

    3. Sun pit hangouts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When the spring sun really starts to warm things up, there\u2019s a classic that never fails\u2014digging into the mountain and staying a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Where you set up your snow pit? Wherever it feels right. Just off the trail, where the snow is soft enough to shape and the view sets the mood. The mountain is full of inviting spots\u2014it\u2019s more about the feeling than the exact location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pack your backpack with the essentials: a shovel, a seat pad, and something good to snack on. Dig in for shelter, settle back, and let the sun do the rest. Chocolate and oranges are a given\u2014just as much a part of it as the pause itself. And yes, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. The spring sun is generous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There\u2019s no schedule here. Let the break last longer than planned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Ski the backside to Hus\u00e5<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A ski adventure that feels like a well-kept secret starts at the top of \u00c5reskutan and leads you all the way to the small, authentic ski area of Gruvbacken in Hus\u00e5<\/a>, tucked away on the mountain\u2019s backside. From the summit, follow the marked trail down\u2014it\u2019s groomed, clearly signed, and stretches about 10 kilometers. The route varies in difficulty, but anyone with solid basic skills can make it down comfortably. Plan for about an hour from the top to Hus\u00e5, with time to pause, take in the views, and settle into the mountain\u2019s natural rhythm along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once you arrive, enjoy a cozy lunch at Gruvstugan<\/a> and take a few runs in Gruvbacken before hopping on the snowcat back to the Stendalen lift in \u00c5re\u2019s ski system. When you book your return, both the snowcat ride and a lift pass for Gruvbacken are included\u2014an easy way to tie the whole experience together. The ride back takes around 25 minutes, with departures arranged as needed and the final trip timed with the Stendalen lift hours, so you can seamlessly continue your day in \u00c5re. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Get in touch with Gruvbacken<\/a> to reserve your spot. The mountains are waiting\u2014quiet, white, and closer than you think. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. Go ski touring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This is a classic way to experience late winter in the mountains. Few things compare to heading out on touring skis\u2014 at your own pace, powered by your own stride. It\u2019s quiet, unhurried, and wide open, with the landscape unfolding all around you. Around Ull\u00e5dalen<\/a>, V\u00e5l\u00e5dalen<\/a>, Ottsj\u00f6<\/a> and Eds\u00e5sdalen <\/a>you\u2019ll find plenty of scenic trails suited for both short outings and longer tours.     No gear? No problem. You can easily rent touring equipment at \u00c5re Sportshop<\/a>. Located right off the E14 in Unders\u00e5ker\u2014on the way to Eds\u00e5sdalen, Ottsj\u00f6, and V\u00e5l\u00e5dalen\u2014it\u2019s a convenient stop that gets you out on the trails without any detours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6. Ice fishing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Buy a fishing license<\/a> and fill your backpack with a thermos and something to sit on. Trout and Char are found in almost all waters around \u00c5re, but a recommendation is to go to Greningen. You can reach Greningen from Duved, or from Lake \u00c5resj\u00f6n.     7. Skate skiing in Ull\u00e5dalen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There are April mornings that only happen here. Early hours on the cross-country trails in Ull\u00e5dalen<\/a>, when the mountains feel almost untouched. The sun has just started to warm, and the air carries a hint of spring\u2014while the snow still holds firm like winter.

    Overnight temperatures keep the tracks crisp and fast, making for some of the smoothest skiing of the season. It glides, it responds, it flows\u2014without effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Head out early, and chances are you\u2019ll have it almost to yourself. No crowds, no noise to break the rhythm\u2014just a quiet stillness that settles deep. The only sound is your skis against the snow, in a landscape slowly coming to life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s the contrast that makes it so special. Spring in the air. Winter in the snow. A feeling you can\u2019t recreate\u2014only experience, right there, in that moment. <\/p>\n\n\n
