With the right technique and stance, a stand-up paddleboard is the perfect way to glide across Åre's calm waters. From the ice melting in May until it returns in November, paddlers take to Lake Åre as well as the surrounding lakes, tarns and rivers. During the colder months, we recommend wearing a wetsuit and neoprene boots in addition to the life jacket, which should always be worn on the water. You might even want to pack a pair of gloves.
Paddle to a secluded beach or keep an eye out for beavers
Whether you're after a short outing or a bigger adventure, there are plenty of paddling routes to explore. Paddle the waterways in western Jämtland and you have a good chance of spotting a beaver. On Lake Åre, head upstream towards Ängarna for excellent birdwatching, or paddle downstream to discover beautiful sandy beaches along the southern shoreline. The panoramic view of Åre and Åreskutan from across the lake is worth the trip alone.
Before setting out, and throughout your paddle, keep an eye on the weather. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, and even a light breeze can make it much harder to stay on course and return to shore – especially on a stand-up paddleboard.
Paddle your way through Åre, or enjoy the calm.
Rentals and tours
You can rent SUP boards and book guided tours with different themes through Åreguiderna, Explore Åre and Vöks Outdoor. If you rent an inflatable board, you can easily take it to any beach and inflate it there – the perfect companion for anyone who prefers being out on the water to lying on the shore. Explore Åre also offers beginner courses and SUP camps. If you're staying at Holiday Club, SUP board rental is included, and when the lakes are frozen they run indoor SUP yoga and other SUP fitness sessions. In short, there are plenty of ways to experience stand-up paddleboarding in Åre.
