Golf on challenging Mountain Course
Åre Golf Club’s 18-hole course, driving range and café is according to us the mountain world’s most beautiful golf course. Imagine that everything started as an April Fool’s joke.
Fifteen km west of Åre, in Staa, is where you’ll find Åre Golf Club and Åre Golf Course. A course with 18-holes in alternating forests and parks overlooking the mountains and the river Indalsälven. Everything started years ago, in the 80s with Åre legends Olle Rolén and Arne Wennås. They wanted to invest in making Åre-Duved the largest leisure area in Europe with a goal of arranging a world-class golf competition here. The course would lie in Ullådalen and the irrigation system would ensure that Ullådalen had artificial snow for autumn and spring skiing. In addition, a grass variety that deterred mosquitoes had been sowed. April Fools! The joke was published in the local newspapers, but it was still a seed that grew there somewhere and in 1990 Åre Golfbana in Staa was inaugurated.
Play at Åre Golf Club
To play on the course, a green card and a current golf membership are required in any golf club. But it goes without saying that you can try golf at one of the club’s practice areas. Clubs rentals are available.
The golf course is in the mountain world so we’re not talking 365 days of sun and a sea of greenkeepers. Sometimes it’s wet and sometimes there are mosquitos, but that’s all a part of the charm. Here are some facts about the course:
- 18 holes
- Par 72
- Course length: yellow tee 5710, red tee 4805
*No one forgets the closing eighteenth hole – the club’s signature hole. There are no safe cards and every time is a new challenge. A par 3 where you, depending on the direction of the wind, may have to choose everything from a 9 iron to a driver to reach the green, which is guarded by water.
Good luck!
