Traveling to Åre is quite straight forward. The train station is in the heart of the village, the nearest airport is just over an hour away and the largest airport is just two hours dito. When on site, most things are located within walking distance and if not, there are local means of transportation on offer. Let us guide you on your journey to and from Åre, and how to get around while you’re here.  


By Air

There are two airports within a two hours’ drive of Åre. Åre/Östersund Airport is the closest, just over an hour away, and Trondheim Airport in Stjördal is the largest if the two, circa two hours’ drive from Åre. Please note that you may choose a fossil free ticket to promote more climate effective flights.

 


Åre/Östersund Airport

Åre/Östersund Airport is located on Frösön, outside Östersund, a 1 hour and 10 minutes’ drive from Åre. The airport offers direct national flights from Åre and Umeå and international connections. Direct flights to and from Copenhagen are available during the winter season.

Transfer

  • Transfers (bus or taxi) from Åre/Östersund Airport are available via Åre Transfer.
  • Several taxi companies also offer deals to and from the airport.
  • Rental cars are available at the airport (see under Rental Cars).
  • If you wish, it’s possible to book a bus transfer to Östersund and take the train to Åre from Östersund Central Station. Please take note of departure times for trains and buses and book your tickets when you book your flight.

Trondheim Airport (Vaernes)

Trondheim Airport is a larger airport than Åre/Östersund with multiple departures to choose from, located in Stjördal, 36 km from Trondheim and circa 2 hours from Åre. Direct flights from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Helsinki, London, Munich, Riga, Split and more are available.

Transfer

  • The easiest way to get to Åre from Trondheim Airport is by pre-booking your rental or taxi.
  • Transfers via train, buses and taxi to Trondheim for connections are available.
  • You can take the train from Trondheim to Åre, but you need to change trains in Storlien. Be sure to check departure times for trains and buses when booking your flight as train departures do not necessarily sync with airport arrivals.

Transfer to & from Östersund

During Åre Höstmarknad (Åre Autumn Market, September 26-28) and the winter season you can book your transfer digitally with Flygtaxi from Östersund to Åre and Duved. The winter season starts on December 12 and continues until May 3, 2026.

How it’s Done

  • Transfer is available from Östersund to Åre and Duved and back.
  • Digital booking opens on June 1.
  • Transfers are available Thursday, Friday and Sunday (no transfer on Saturdays).

By Train

People have travelled to and from Åre by train since 1882 and the train station, a large and modern building with all necessary facilities, is in the heart of the village. Traveling to Åre by train is climate clever, comfortable and offers some nice scenery along the way. On site, you can reach your accommodation by rental car, taxi or the local bus, or you can walk as most locations in Åre is within walking distance.

SJ

– The National Swedish Railway company

SJ operates routes to and from Åre daily, all year round. Their booking system also allows you to book tickets for routes operated by other train companies. Please note that from 28 April 2025 there will be no night trains available from Gothenburg and Stockholm will be the start and end station for the night train to and from Åre.

Day Trains, Stockholm – Åre | Day trains are available for booking daily to and from Åre and Stockholm and there are two departure times to choose from.

Night Trains, Stockholm – Åre | Night trains are available for booking to and from Åre and Stockholm daily. Board the train in Stockholm and wake up in Åre just in time for check-in and the opening of the lifts.

Night Trains, Gothenburg – Åre | Until April 27th 2025, night trains are available for booking from Gothenburg to Duved on a  daily basis. From April 28th, these departures are no longer available and Stockholm will be start and end station for the night train.

Snälltåget

National and international routes

Snälltåget offers night train departures from Malmö in the south of Sweden to Åre during the summer and winter seasons. In Undersåker, Snälltåget offers transfers to Edsåsdalen and Vålådalen in Southern Årefjällen.

Is my train on time?

On the Swedish Transport Administration’s website you can follow all trains in realtime, get information about any delays or check if the train is on time. Filter your selection by position or train number.

The key rail hubs

Stockholm is Sweden’s most important railway hub and most trains depart from, arrive at or pass through Stockholm.

Get around in Åre

You can get around by rental car or taxi all year round. During the winter and summer seasons there are also local buses that allow you to bring skis or bicycles. We have collected information about how to get around Åre on this website.


 

By Car

Driving to and in Åre is mostly not that complicated, although the traffic situation in Åre during peak season can be a challenge.

How to Get Here by Car

The European Route called E14 gets you right into Åre centre. It stretches from Trondheim in Norway to Sundsvall on the Swedish eastern coast where it connects to the E4. The E14 passes via Undersåker, Åre, Tegefjäll and Duved and connects to the Norwegian E6 in the west, and to the 321 (via Svenstavik) along the way between Östersund and Åre.

TIP 1 If you plan to drive to Åre, it’s a good idea to check if parking is included in your booked accommodation.

TIP 2 Keep an eye on the current traffic situation via the Swedish Transport Administration’s website.

Good to Know

  • In Sweden, we drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • The following things are required to drive in Sweden:
    Driver’s license
    Passport
    Insurance certificate
    Proof of registration (if you have a rental car, ask the rental company where it is)
    Warning triangle (required)
    Studded or other tires approved for winter driving (required in winter)
  • 1 kilometre is 0,6 miles. Swedish rental cars will give you speed and distance in kilometres.
  • The speed signs are yellow with a red outline. Follow them, especially in densely populated areas as the legal consequences for speeding in areas with lower speed limits are severe.
  • Seat belts must be worn, and small children need to be in car seats.
  • Make sure you know where you can park your vehicle and download the right parking apps – it’s not always possible to pay by credit card. Don’t park along the road unless you’re sure it’s allowed.
  • Drinking and driving is prohibited. You may be asked for a breathalyser test at any time when stopped by police and the limit is 0.02 percent.

Parking

Parking is allowed in designated parking lots only. These are marked with Parking signs marked with a P. Nearly all parking lots in Åre and around Åre are paid parking which means you are required to pay by the hour. If you have a season ski pass, you can connect your car’s registration number to your ski pass and park free of charge in SkiStar’s parking lots. Read more >>

How to pay for parking

  • Pay via the AimoPark App.
  • Use your credit card in the parking meters on site.
  • Use the Text Messaging Service (SMS). All information needed is posted on the respective parking meter.

Bus to & in Åre

Regional & National Bus Services

Länstrafiken Jämtland

Länstrafiken offers regional and local public transportation in the county of Jämtland.

Årebussen

Express bus during the winter season to Åre from Stockholm with stops in Uppsala, Gävle, Sundsvall and Östersund. Same return path.

Book a ”private” bus

Book your own bus transport through one of the local transport companies. Svenssons i Saxvallen offers flexible bus transportation for private and group trips. Topptaxi is another company that offer bus transportation.

Local Bus Services

The ski bus takes you around our ski area from Duved to Åre Björnen. It is available during winter season respectively and follows the lifts’ opening hours. Traveling by ski bus is free of charge for those with a valid Ski Pass. For more info, go to SkiStar’s website >>

During summer bus number 702 run in a similar fashion to the ski bus between Åre and Björnen. There are plenty of stops along the way so you can choose where to get on and off. For example, you can take the 702 from Åre Train Station to Björnen when arriving by train.

 


Caravan/Camper

Traveling by caravan or camper is a great way to get around. There are designated parking lots for caravans and camper vans, that might offer facilities and service points such as charging outlets and fresh water sources, as it is usually not permitted to park overnight at regular parking lots. Make sure to check availability in advance.

  • Vällistegården’s Camping | Take the E14 from Åre towards Östersund, turn towards Undersåker and go over the train tracks/bridge (map here). Wifi and service available.
