Great restaurants are easy to find in Åre. From award-winning kitchens to creative menus and chefs who know their craft, there's plenty to get excited about. But some places offer something that goes well beyond what's on the plate. It's not about more courses or fancier table settings. It's about the entire experience.
We've picked three unforgettable dining experiences that are worth a trip to Åre in their own right. Places where the food is only part of the story, and getting to the table is half the adventure..
Åre Nature Studio
In Tångböle, about 25 kilometers from Åre, a small log hunting cabin sits on a hillside overlooking Tångböleströmmen. Barely bigger than a living room, this unassuming cabin is home to Åre Nature Studio, a dining destination that has earned recognition far beyond the mountains.
Here, the menu follows the seasons, shaped by what the surrounding forests, waters, and local hunting traditions have to offer. The evening begins outdoors around a crackling fire before moving inside for a tasting menu that celebrates local ingredients and time-honored cooking techniques.
Just a handful of guests, exceptional craftsmanship, and plenty of surprises. Åre Nature Studio is the kind of place where dinner in a tiny hunting cabin might just become the highlight of your entire trip.
Getting there: The easiest way to reach Åre Nature Studio is by car. From Åre, take the E14 west toward Ånn and Storlien. Just after crossing Tångböleströmmen, take the first right. Keep right as you continue along the road for the final 1.5 kilometers to Åre Nature Studio.
Hållfjällets turist station
Eight kilometers from the nearest road, Hållfjällets turist station is a destination worth going the extra mile for. Reached on foot, skis, or snowmobile, this beautifully restored mountain lodge from the 1940s combines the peaceful solitude of the mountains with exceptional food and warm, personal hospitality.
In the dining room, thoughtfully crafted dishes showcase vegetables grown in the lodge's own gardens in Ottsjö, alongside ingredients sourced from the surrounding region. And then there's the wine cellar, an unexpected discovery in a place so far off the beaten path. Here, there's no need to rush. Every meal, every moment, and every detail is given the attention it deserves. At Hållfjället, dinner and an overnight stay are all part of the experience.
For those who appreciate outstanding food, a true escape into the mountains, and hospitality where every little detail matters.
Getting there: Reaching Hållfjället takes a little more effort than your average drive, and that's part of what makes it so special. The journey begins in Ottsjö, about 20 minutes by car from Undersåker train station and 30 minutes from Åre. This is where the road ends and an eight-kilometer trail winds its way up into the mountains.
From Ottsjö, the adventure continues on foot, skis, or snowmobile. If you choose to hike or ski, you'll have plenty of time to soak up the mountain scenery along the way. After all, getting there is part of the experience.
Skiers Hütte
There are mountain restaurants. And then there's Skiers Hütte, tucked away on the slopes of Åreskutan. Think bubbling cheese fondue, delicious raclette, and hearty dinners in a cozy alpine setting that brings a taste of the Alps to the heart of Åre.
Getting there is part of the fun. Arrive on skis or by snowmobile, gather around the table, and settle in for an evening of great food and good company. Rustic, relaxed, and exactly the kind of place where one more hour easily turns into two.
Skiers Hütte welcomes groups with advance reservations, making it a great choice for friends or colleagues looking to turn an ordinary dinner into something worth remembering.
Getting there: In winter, one of the most exciting ways to reach Skiers Hütte is from the back side of Åreskutan. If you choose this route, booking a guide is recommended. Contact Skiers Hütte for help planning your adventure!
Another option is to start at Åreguiderna's snowmobile base in Björnen. From there, it's three kilometers uphill to the cabin, following the snowmobile trail and marked route. You can make the journey on skis or by snowmobile.
You can also traverse across the mountain from Fjällgårdsexpressen. Be sure to stay high and above the tree line, as dropping too low can lead you into stream gullies.
In summer, the route from Åreguiderna's snowmobile base is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, or trail running. Three summer trails pass right by the cabin: Björnens triangel (221), Åreskutan runt (211), and Lillskutan (216). You can find all three on Åre Trails.
Skiers Hütte can also help arrange transportation upon request.
