Dog Sledding

MORE ABOUT DOG SLEDDDING

The journey takes you through snow-covered forests and magnificent mountain landscapes, with only the sound of sled runners on the snow, the rush of the wind, and occasionally the eager barking of the huskies. Book your dog sledding adventure with one of our activity providers. This is also an experience that can surprisingly be enjoyed on bare ground!

Ski touring

SKI TOURING IN ÅRE | ÅRE TRAILS

Touring skis let you glide effortlessly across the mountains, on unprepared trails and over more challenging terrain. There are plenty of excellent ski touring routes, which you can find on Åre Trails (see above), and of course, you set your own pace, distance, and difficulty level. You can also book a guided tour, and if you don’t have your own equipment, there are companies that both rent and sell everything you need.

Visit a frozen waterfall

CHASING WATERFALLS

There are many waterfalls to visit in western Jämtland, and in winter they are just as spectacular as in spring, when the falls freeze into ice and magical formations appear. The largest nearby is Tännforsen, Sweden’s biggest waterfall, and Ristafallet, known from the film about Ronja the Robber’s Daughter — it played the role of Ronja’s Glupafall.

Ice Fishing

FISHING IN ÅRE

Ice fishing is the perfect way to slow down and relax. Then, your heart leaps every time you get a bite — before settling again, out on the ice, surrounded by breathtaking nature. Of course, you can venture out on your own, and we recommend checking in with Fjällsport in Duved for advice. Alternatively, a guided tour offers a wonderful, hassle-free experience!

Snowshoeing

Glide almost silently through snowy landscapes where neither snowmobiles nor touring skis can take you — snowshoes let you venture freely across deep snow. Traditional snowshoes were heavy, made of wood and leather, but today’s are lightweight, easy to use, and even lighter than your own boots. You can set out on your own with a rental pair, or join a guided tour for a fully immersive winter adventure.

The northern lights

Witnessing the Northern Lights dance across a dark autumn or winter sky is an unforgettable experience. Wrap up warm, bring a thermos and a sitting mat, and head to a spot far from any light pollution — or let a guide lead the way, ensuring a magical and memorable encounter with this natural wonder.
