Tips for your trail run

  • Mountain weather can change quickly, so bring an extra layer and enough water and snacks to keep your energy up.
  • Check the forecast before you head out, and let someone know where you're starting, where you plan to finish, and when you expect to be back.
  • Bring your phone. If you're planning a longer run or heading into areas with limited cell coverage, consider carrying a satellite communicator, such as a Garmin inReach.
  • Don't be afraid to turn back if conditions change. The mountains will still be there tomorrow.
  • Boardwalks across wetlands and muddy sections make running easier while also protecting the fragile landscape. Stay on the boardwalk whenever possible, and avoid trails that are extremely wet after heavy rain.
  • If you encounter reindeer or other wildlife, give them plenty of space and avoid running through the middle of a herd.

Shorter trail runs

You don't have to be training for a race to enjoy trail running in Åre. Whether you're looking for a short, moderate, or long run—with plenty of elevation or as little climbing as possible—there's a route to suit you. If you're new to mountain running, shorter routes are a great way to get started. Here are a few of our favorites, and you'll find even more options on Åre Trails.

Around and up Totthummeln

Elevation gain: 515 m | Distance: 5.6 km | Getting there: Follow trail 213

If you enjoy hill running, this is the perfect morning workout. Many runners mix running with a brisk hike on the steepest sections. The trail climbs through lush mountain birch forest before easing off as you approach the summit. Your reward? Spectacular mountain views.

Lillådammen and Byxtjärn trails

Distance: 7 km | Getting there: Follow trail 221c

Run through the forest along trail 221 toward Lillådammen and Byxtjärn. The trail starts at Fröå Mine and splits after a few kilometers, giving you the choice between the two mountain tarns. Byxtjärn is more sheltered, while Lillådammen is more exposed and often a little muddier. Return the same way—or cool off with a refreshing dip before rewarding yourself with lunch at Bergstugan in Fröå.

Solstigen

Elevation gain: 160 m | Distance: 3.9 km | Getting there: Follow trail 219

More than 100 years old, Solstigen (the Sun Trail) was once a favorite among Åre's earliest mountain visitors. Start near the Funicular Railway/Fjällgården and run through enchanting mountain forest on the slopes of Totthummeln. About halfway along, the trail turns sharply right and leads you back to Åre Square via a charming village road.

Åtorpsrundan

Elevation gain: 90 m | Distance: 4.2 km | Getting there: Follow trail 225

Located near family-friendly Fröå Mine, this gentle forest loop is ideal for families and runners looking for an easy outing. Back at the historic mine area you'll find a campfire site with firewood provided. Pack some hot dogs for the grill and round off your run with a relaxed outdoor meal while the kids explore the area.

Platåleden

Distance: 6.3 km | Getting there: Follow trail 260

This relatively easy trail begins with a gradual climb on boardwalks to Platåkåtan, then continues through beautiful mountain birch forest before opening onto the wide expanses of the Ottsjö Plateau. The bog section is also covered by boardwalks, and if you're up for a short detour, climb Kläpphögarna for sweeping views of Lake Ottsjön and Ottfjället.

Longer trail runs

Ready to take on a bigger challenge? Here are a few of our favorite routes around the 10 km mark, plus one that's a little longer. You'll find even more options on the Åre Trails digital trail map, where you can explore different areas and choose the distance and route that best suits you.

Lillskutan

Elevation gain: 560 m | Distance: 11 km

This scenic loop around Lillskutan offers a varied mix of mountain terrain, from beautiful spruce forests to open alpine landscapes. You'll often pass patches of lingering snow that melt slowly throughout the summer, while mountain streams cross the trail in several places, making sections wet depending on recent weather. Take the VM6 chairlift and Hummel Lift to the trailhead and save your legs some climbing.

Rödkullerundan

Elevation gain: 410 m | Distance: 10.3 km

Ride the VM6 chairlift and Hummel Lift to Mörvikshummeln and follow the signs for trail 210. Alternatively, take the VM8 gondola for a route that's mostly downhill all the way back to Åre Village. The trail descends through Stendalen, offering beautiful westward views before turning east for a fun downhill run into the village. It's an excellent way to experience the mountains with Åre as your starting point.

Getting there: Follow trail 210

Tegeforsen out and back

Elevation gain: 20 m | Distance: 12 km

Looking for an easier run? The route to Tegeforsen Waterfall follows paved roads and gravel paths rather than mountain trails, making it ideal for tired legs, rainy days, or even a run with a stroller. From Åre Square to the waterfall is about 6 km one way. Cross the railway tracks just beyond the winding section of Årevägen and follow the signs for trail 218 or the St. Olav's Trail.

Getting there: Follow trail 218

Björnentriangeln

Elevation gain: 460 m | Distance: 16.8 km

If you're looking for a longer day on the trails without tackling steep mountain summits, Björnentriangeln is a great choice. Conditions can be wet after heavy rain, but the reward is a peaceful route through beautiful mountain scenery. The trail passes beneath the dramatic cliffs of Blåsten, where you may even spot birds of prey soaring overhead.

Getting there: Follow trail 221

Long trail runs

Go farther, stay out longer, and experience some of Åre's most spectacular trails. Here are four mountain favorites for runners looking to venture well beyond the neighborhood running path. Pack your running vest with an extra layer, snacks, and a refillable water bottle—you'll find plenty of fresh mountain streams along the way. Before you head out, let someone know your planned route and expected return time. Then get ready for breathtaking alpine scenery, a true sense of wilderness, and mile after mile of unforgettable mountain views.
