A month of contrasts

October in Åre moves at a slower pace, with autumn, winter and everything in between. Here are some of the things we love about Åre in October.

The lifts are closed for the season and a rather slower pace sets over Åre, but that’s no reason for laying low. There are plenty of things to get on with, not least get in shape for the winter season and prepare those so important leg muscles for what’s to come. Preferably in combination with some nice relaxation…Let us give you a taste of what to spend your time on in Åre in October.

Outdoor life

Trails in Åre

October weather can be highly changeable. One day the trees are dressed in autumn colours, the next they may be hidden beneath snow-laden branches. But this is not a reason to not get out and about.

Check which trails are open and head out for a hike, a run or a cycle. Or find a firepit and make an outdoor lunch with a view. Just bring extra, warm and maybe waterproof clothing.

Spend the break in Åre

Autumn break in Åre

Åre’s Autumn Break runs from 5 October to 1 November and offers plenty to do for all ages, whether on your own or together.

The Wilderness Camp in Åre Park is the heart of the holiday, while the programme is filled to the brim with activities and events in and around Åre village for both adults and children – with more being added all the time.

October fest

Restaurants, and beer from Åre

You don’t need to go to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest. October, the favourite month for beer lovers, is the perfect time to discover Åre’s microbreweries, each offering a wide range of exciting flavours.

Sample them at Åre’s restaurants or pick some up from Systembolaget to enjoy your own tasting at home.

Cross country premiere

Vålådalen

Only a few weeks after putting our downhill bikes away for the season, it’s already time to bring out the cross-country gear. In Vålådalen, tracks are prepared in

October using snow saved from last winter and the official opening takes place on October 24 for winter 2026/2027, so make sure your skis, poles and boots are ready!

Pre season training

Outdoor gyms

Prepare properly for the ski season! Strengthen those thighs, build that torso and wake all the muscles you need to keep skiing until May. The outdoor gyms in Björnen and at Åre Strand are great alternatives on a fine October day and of course there are indoor alternatives. STC and SATS have gyms in Åre and Åre Sportcenter in Duved.

Many of the hotels have gyms and for improving your general shape, there’s always the option of running up the mountain.

Experience the Northern Lights

EXPERIENCE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

The Northern Lights season takes off in October, when dark, crisp and clear evenings bring colourful displays across the mountains. There are those who know when the conditions are at their best for spotting the aurora and who share their knowledge in various forums so put on your jacket, fill up your flask and head to a spot away from artificial lights.

Or book a tour with a guide who will take you to the very best viewing locations.

Be a bonne vivant

Eat and drink. and

Eating and drinking well is something we know how to do in Åre and there are plenty of options when it comes to eateries that offer that little extra something. But a lunch served outdoors over an open fire is also luxurious, as is a Swedish fika made from local produce.

Enjoy the silence

Peaceful activities

Åre offers activities and events en masse but that doesn’t mean we need to go full speed all the time. So sit back and enjoy some peace and tranquility in Åre in October, as the vally is between seasons.

Go for a yoga session, go swimming (indoors or out), explore the sights, learn about Åre’s history, go to the spa, have a long breakfast, sleep in and take a nice, calm walk.

Enjoy the indoors

Mountain weather

Åre is a place where every forecast is a good one, if you’re dressed appropriately. But a day indoors might be nice anyway, spending it in your hut, at your hotel or hostel or your apartment. And if restlessness sets in, there are places to go with plenty of acitivites for the whole family.

How about the Pool & Sauna World at Holiday Club, or jump and play at JumpYard, or climbing or playing tennis or padel at Åre Sportcenter in Duved?

Go skiing (?)

#ÅRESWEDEN

After a snowfall, the valley often clears quickly, but higher up, snow can stick around—sometimes enough for the first turns of the season. Pack your gear and hike until the snow layer is thick enough. If you’re worried about damaging your skis, grab an older pair and enjoy! Keep an eye on social media using the hashtag #åresweden to spot the season’s first riders and to know whern it’s time to head out.
