Snowmobile Adventures in Åre

The snowmobile – a trusted workhorse and pure pleasure. Riding a snowmobile in Åre lets you experience the vast open landscapes, glide along forest-lined trails and across frozen winter lakes. You’ll reach places that would otherwise be hard to get to – either on your own or with a guide. Here, we’ll point you towards new adventures in and around Åre.

The snowmobile offers a great way to get around, and there are so many models and variations that we won’t go into here. We’ll leave that to the experts, of which there are plenty in this area of the world. If you have a driver’s license or ID valid for driving a snowmobile, you can go out on your own (always with another person, though) to explore the trails in the region. If you don’t have a valid license for snowmobiles, there are plenty of experienced guides who know the mountains like the back of their hand, so you can enjoy a snowmobile outing with your family, friends, or colleagues.

Guides & Experts

Trips on mini snowmobiles, excursions with electric snowmobiles, private tours or group adventures, evening excursions – the range of fun, exciting, and perhaps even adrenaline-pumping snowmobile experiences in nature is vast. You’re welcome to explore what our activity providers offer for families, friends, conference groups, hen or stag parties. Find out more about the experiences available from each provider, and if you already own or can drive a snowmobile, there are also options to rent or upgrade your private snowmobile.

Good to Know

How Should I Dress?

Warmly! Even in milder temperatures, the cooling effect while riding a snowmobile can be intense. Windproof overalls, warm base layers, and well-insulated mid-layers (for example, a down jacket under your windproof outer layer) are recommended, and so are warm, windproof mittens and boots. By law, you must wear a helmet when driving a snowmobile. If you book a guided tour or snowmobile safari, the guides will assist you with what to wear and they will supply you with some of the equipment.

How do I Know if I can Drive a Snowmobile?

If you only drive a snowmobile as part of an organised tourist activity, such as on a snowmobile safari, you need the equivalent to a valid category B driving licence. When participating in a snowmobile safari or guided tour, the company will also assist you with the applicable rules, equipment, clothing, and more.

Driving on Your Own

If you haven’t driven a snowmobile before—or if you’re not quite used to navigating the mountains—we’d highly recommend booking a guided tour. Once you’re ready to venture out on your own, it’s very important to follow the rules and laws. The County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen Jämtland), the municipality (Åre kommun) and VÄSEK (Western Jämtland Snowmobile Economic Association) has plenty of info on where, when, and how to drive. You can also buy your trail pass at VÄSEK.
