Moose hunting

START: September 1
RESTART: October 10

The moose hunting season in Jämtland begins on 1 September. In licensed hunting areas and moose management areas, hunting is permitted until 26 September, followed by a 14-day break. The season then resumes from 10 October until 31 January the following year.

Moose hunting is carried out by teams of hunters working together with free-ranging hunting dogs. Hunters use high-powered rifles with bullets that can travel several hundred metres, so it is important to stay alert, keep a safe distance and follow any instructions or signage in the area.

START: August 25

Higher up in the mountains, hunters pursue ptarmigan, while in the forest they hunt capercaillie and black grouse. Hunting may be carried out individually or in teams, often with the help of free-ranging hunting dogs. Shotguns are used, with an effective range of around 50 metres. Hunting activity is at its busiest during the first few weeks of the season before gradually becoming less frequent.

Can I go into the forest during the moose hunting season?

Moose hunting is at its busiest during the first weeks of the season, so be extra aware of signs indicating that hunting is in progress, hunters carrying firearms and free-ranging hunting dogs. You're always welcome to hike on marked trails, but if hunting is taking place in the area, we encourage you to choose a different route. There's plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the forests and mountains.

Hunting does not close the mountains or forests. However, if hunting is taking place in a particular area, we encourage you to choose another route or destination for the day.

Hunting rights belong to the landowner or to someone who has leased those rights. Other visitors are still free to access the land under Sweden's Right of Public Access, which continues to apply throughout the hunting season.

The most important thing is to show consideration for one another while enjoying nature. Pay attention to hunting signs, keep your dog on a leash and, if you meet hunters, don't hesitate to say hello and ask about their activity. With a little respect and communication, there's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the mountains.

A good tip is to check whether the area you plan to visit has a local Facebook page. Hunting teams sometimes post updates about where and when they will be hunting.
