Season opening on June 5

This day marks the season opening of Åre Bike Park Downhill, which means events and happenings all round. This is a highlight for experienced cyclists and curious beginners with a touch of National Day celebrations but, of course, you don’t have to be on two wheels to take the lift and get a ride up to higher grounds.

Tip! If you plan on renting a bike, please place your booking well beforehand as pressure is high this day. What you need to know:

Love hiking

Long and winding trails with a view are easy to find in and around Åre, but so too are easier alternatives for getting out and experiencing nature, which is clad in the pure green hues of early summer. Reach higher altitudes and explore the surroundings from 1420 metres above sea level by taking the lift to Åreskutan’s peak.

If you lack any equipment to make today’s and future hiking tours comfortable, stop by a shop whose competent staff is ready to help you cover your needs.

A reminder: In June, the ground is still wet from the winter’s downpour. Seek drier terrain to help protect our trails and mountains from excessive wear and tear. Also, nature is full of new life and curious and unsuspecting little ones, so keep your dog on a lead (always), avoid bushy areas and avoid getting close to baby animals, as well as their parents. Thanks for your help!

Eat outdoors

Food consumed under a bare sky tastes better, especially by an open fire but likewise by a portable stove or straight from your backpack. June is a great time to try cooking outdoors, especially at the beginning of the month as many restaurants have more modest opening hours then. Take an outing where food is the goal and make use of the fire pits by Åre beach promenade or in Björnen, for example.

High altitude adventures

Challenge yourself and others and feel the adrenaline rush in SkiStars climbing park in Björnen where you will find ten courses of varying difficulty. This is perfect for the family, a group of friends or a hen and stag party! Prepare for problem solving at high altitude (the highest point is 12 meters above ground level) and rush between the trees on the zipline course. You need to be at least 7 years old and 120 centimeters tall, and for younger adventurers there is a smaller park in central Björnen.

Read more and book via SkiStar’s website or app.

Experience Åre from above

You hear the sound and see them in the sky all year round: Paragliders launching from Åreskutan and floating around the village. It’s surely an unbeatable feeling to fly freely and watch the world below. It’s not really something you do on your own at first, but Skysport Åre offers both tandem flights and introductory courses if you’ve been bitten by the paragliding bug. Visit Skysport Åre here.

Hang out

Åre square, the marina, the beach, the skate park, Ullån, Tegeforsen, Åre park… you’ll find all these places within walking distance of Åre village and they’re perfect for just hanging out and doing whatever that might entail. Pack your bag with good food, drinks, a book, a blanket, maybe an outdoor game, or whatever suits you best.

If you want to be sure to find coffee, ice cream and sweet drinks nearby, there’s a list of tips on where to find them here.

Celebrate Midsummer

Midsummer’s Eve is a rather quiet affair, so do your own thing. Hike, bike, stroll, swim, paddle or whatever you like. Spend time on the mountain or by a stream or in the forest with a backpack filled of good food and drinks for a nice picnic.

Join in on traditional Midsummer Celebrations in Fröå Gruva, Björnen. Spend time with friends and family and go on an excursion and make the most of Midsummer’s day as the lifts will be have extra long opening hours.

Celebrate Midsummer’s day – the longest day of the year

Celebrate Midsummer Day with mountain adventures long into the evening. Enjoy world-class downhill biking, high-altitude hiking, and 360° views from the top of Åreskutan. The Gondola and Stjärnliften stay open until 21:00 (!) for biking.

Want to end the day with football? The Gondola runs until 22:00, taking you to Base Camp on Åreskutan to watch Sweden’s World Cup match on a giant screen surrounded by mountain views. And best of all? The Gondola is free all day long. Back in the village, Broken’s DJ keeps the party going from 22:00 to 01:00.

Run!

Run up, down, traverse, go on your own or participate in a race, of which there are plenty to choose from in June. Why not gather colleagues, friends and family and participate in the St Olavs relay from Trondheim to Östersund? Anyone, from young to old, from elite to beginner, can take part, thanks to the relay format.

Or try Fjällmaraton Gastronomi (Gastronomy) at the end of June where you can enjoy local food produce served at the stations along the classical Fjällmaraton trails.

Celebrate diversity

There are, as you can see, plenty of things to celebrate in June and diversity is another thing that can be on your priority list of things to honor. There are many ways of being an outdoor person and that should be heard, seen and felt. Outdoor Pride is all about diversity and on June 28th, this is marked with a parade where anyone who values human rights and equality can participate. It starts from Åre torg which will be painted in the colors of the rainbow, music, exhibitors and activities.

River rafting and paddling

June is one of the best times of the year for paddling and white-water rafting in Åre. As snowmelt from the mountains fills the rivers and streams, exciting rapids await, along with calmer routes where you can drift through the landscape and experience the mountains from a completely different perspective. Whether you’re looking for adrenaline or a more relaxed adventure, there are water-based experiences for both beginners and experienced paddlers.
