Take a Stroll
Hiking is great for the body and mind but there’s no need to go on for miles, crossing valleys and climbing mountain peaks. Simply taking a stroll around the village is sometimes all you need. Below are a few tips on nice promenades in and nearby Åre centre where you can take a stroll and enjoy the views.
From Åre Square to Tott Hotel
Begin your route from Åre torg. Walk uphill along Stationsvägen towards the E14 (the European highway). As Stationsvägen turns right after just a couple of hundred meters, there’s a tunnel under the E14 on your left. Walk through the tunnel, cross Tottvägen and take the path through the woods where there’s a bridge crossing Susabäcken (Susa River). Continue until you reach the massive Tott Hotel (it’s hard to miss).
From here, you can continue along Trollstigen, through the pine forest until you reach Fjällgården. Another option is to turn right at Tott Hotel and walk downhill along Kurortsvägen until it meets Årevägen which will take you back to Åre centre. A third option is to walk eastwards from Tott Hotel and follow the gravel road through beautiful Tottbyn (see below).
Tottens by
Tottens by (The Tott Village) is one of the original three hamlets that merged into Åre Village and still looks a bit like it did generations ago. Walking through is well worth your time, for the historic experience and for the magnificent view.
Start at Tott Hotel and walk eastwards along the gravel road Tottens by. When you reach the brook, you can turn around or continue along Totthyllan and turn back to Åre centre via Granlidsvägen, Tottebovägen and Kurortsvägen.
The Beach Promenade
The beach promenade along Lake Åresjön makes for a beautiful stroll. Start at the Marina (click the link above to find it), on the lakeside of the railroad bridge next to Coop and Systembolaget and follow the promenade westwards. Stop along one of the small beaches and dip your toes or just continue until you’ve passed Holiday Club. On the opposite side of Holiday Club, there’s an elevated railroad crossing you may use to get back to Åre Centre.
Karl Johans väg
This is a short walk but makes a nice detour through a lovely residential area all year round. Coming from Åre Square, walk towards Åre’s Old Church and make a left turn after passing the parish house St Olavsgården. Make a right turn and follow Kurortsvägen for about 100 metres and turn right again, onto Karl Johan’s väg (road). The road connects to Årevägen so to get back to Åre centre, make a right after the last house and head back, or just turn around and walk back.
The Funicular Sweep
The Funicular valley station (Åre Bergbana) is at Åre Square, so that’s where to begin this stroll. Pass on the right hand side of the Funicular station and take the gravel road passing between the Broken Restaurant and the Funicular tracks. Walk upwards, pass Hotel Granen and continue until you reach Tott Hotel. You’ll see some of Åre’s most interesting old buildings along this way, such as Villa Årebo. Cross the bridge on the hillside of Tott Hotel and choose which route to take to get back to Åre centre (see From Åre Square to Tott Hotel above).
St Olavsleden – The Pilgrim Trail
St Olavsleden is a well-known pilgrimage from Selånger in the East to Trondheim in the West. Pilgrims, wanting to visit the grave of the Saint Olav den helige, have traveled along this route for millennia. The entire route is 564 kilometers so it’s a bit of a walk, but, needless to say, you needn’t walk the entire route. Start at Åre’s Old Church and walk along St Olavs väg which changes into Årevägen and continue westwards, for as long as you like. A good place to end is Tegeforsen where you can have a break before heading back.
