In late fall, as the temperature drops below zero, lakes and tarns are transformed into well-polished, glass-like hall-floors. This is the tour-skating season, which is short, but absolutely lovely. The whole of Åre is a ski-touring paradise so read our tips below, put your skates on and go get your icy adventure.

Ånnsjön

Lake Ånnsjön freezes fairly early in the season. The lake is quite large and shallow, beautifully framed by peaks such as the Bunner Mountains and Snasahögarna.

FIND IT Go west on the E14, drive circa 35 km to Ånn or continue another 5 km to Klocka.

Ottsjön

This is one of the most beautiful lakes for skating in the county, framed by forests and the Ottsjö mountain. This is also, usually, skateable early in the season.

FIND IT Take the E14 to Undersåker and go across the bridge towards Vålådalen. After circa 10 km you’re “Sjöändan” where there’s a small parking lot on the right side of the road.

Gevsjön

Gevsjön is a very shallow lake, circa 20 km west of Åre. It offers easy-to-reach skating opportunities early in the winter season.

FIND IT Go west along the E14. After 20 km, you’ll see the large lake on the right hand side of the road.

Tarns

There are plenty of smaller tarns that freeze during early and late fall, especially on higher altitudes. A few favourites within reasonable walking distance from your car is Nulltjärn in Vålådalen and Fröåtjärn in Björnen.
