Åre in September

It’s been a fantastic summer. And as the seasons change, we are ready for an equally great autumn. September comes with colors and outdoor temperatures suitable for hiking and cycling. Autumn has its own, special charm, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it. Here are some September tips on what not to miss.

Åre Kabinbana

Ride the Cable Car

MORE ABOUT THE CABLE CAR

Since its inauguration in 1976, the Åre Cable Car has become a true landmark. Summer and winter alike, the iconic red cabins carry visitors up to 1,274 metres above sea level, offering both a memorable journey and breathtaking views from the top. In the Cable Car House, you’ll find food and refreshments at BaseCamp if you’d like to recharge. From there, it’s only a light hike (trail 214) to Åreskutan’s very summit at 1,420 metres, where you’ll also find Sweden’s highest café, Toppstugan.

MORE ABOUT ÅRE AUTUMN MARKET

Åre Autumn Market is one of the region’s largest annual events. The village comes alive with market stalls, food producers, visitors and locals, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere surrounded by the brilliant colours of autumn. Wander through Åre for three days and enjoy the music, buzz, food and wide range of activities on offer. The market features a main market street, a food court and a dedicated children’s arena. A highlight for 2025 is Sunday’s brand-new Farmer’s Market in Åre Park, giving you even more delicious produce to choose from.

Restock Your Mushroom Basket

NATURE’S PANTRY

This time of year, social media is overflowing with mushroom finds – and for good reason! The forest floor is brimming with chanterelles, porcini, milk caps, hedgehog mushrooms and all sorts of other treasures. If you know where to look, you could be enjoying buttery fried chanterelles or adding a rich twist to your stew with milk caps. The only tricky part is finding them.

Most people guard their favourite spots fiercely, so don’t count on anyone sharing their secrets – but get out there and explore, it can really pay off! Chanterelles thrive in mixed or mountain birch forests on slightly damp south-facing slopes around 700 m above sea level. Milk caps are most common in pine woods, and boletes pop up almost anywhere. BUT! If you’re not 100% sure what you’ve picked, don’t eat it. The same rule goes for mushrooms as for any other wild plants or berries.

Experience History

HUSESYN | MORRVIKJA | SKISTAR’S GUIDE

Discover Åre’s journey through time – from an industrial village to the internationally renowned ski resort it is today! Morrvikja offers guided historical walks where Maria Wilhelmsson brings the past to life with stories of the people who lived here and the old buildings that still stand. Prefer to explore on your own? Then take the shorter or longer version of the Husesyn history trail, where you’ll pass many of Åre’s historic landmarks.

For a tougher hike, follow trail 214 up (or down) Åreskutan – the climb becomes even more rewarding with SkiStar’s digital guide in your ears, leading you through the mountain’s history. Another option is to walk in the footsteps of the pilgrims and learn more about the Caroleans’ fateful march across the mountains. Read more here.

Cooking Outdoors

THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC ACCESS

Food always tastes better outdoors, whether cooked over an open fire or on a camping stove. Make the meal the focus and enjoy a cosy family outing, turn it into a date (perhaps with a nice drink), or bring your colleagues along. But you don’t need to make it complicated. You can find tips for tasty and easy recipes here (in Swedish). You don’t have to go far—there are, for example, barbecue spots at Åre Beach and in Björnen. If you want a longer trip, choose a trail on Åre Trails with all your ingredients in your backpack.

Explore the South

ÅRE TRAILS | MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCES

Discover a new favourite trail! The Southern Åre Mountains is a beautiful, largely untouched (and expansive) area, offering stunning and easily accessible trails of varying difficulty. Turn off the E14 in Undersåker and cross the bridge to explore Edsåsdalen, Vålådalen, Trillevallen, and Ottsjö, enjoying the views of towering peaks like the Bunner and Anaris Mountains. Here you’ll find summits over 1,200 metres, as well as easier walks—so choose the trail that suits you on Åre Trails or Mountain Experiences, and simply enjoy.

Ride Around Åre Bike Park

ÅRE BIKE PARK | TRAILS IN BJÖRNEN

Surprised that autumn is perfect for cycling? Not really—so get pedalling! Åre Bike Park is open Thursday to Sunday throughout September. If you prefer to stay at a lower altitude but still want to enjoy the thrill of winding trails, head to Åre Bike Park Trail in Björnen. There are also pump tracks and more, so the whole family can enjoy two wheels together.

Hike Even More

HIKING | ÅRE TRAILS

In September, you don’t have to worry about midges, mosquitoes, or stings. You might, however, need an extra jumper, hat, and gloves, as it can be chilly at the summits. Crisp September is a fantastic time for hiking, and the difficulty, distance, and elevation are entirely up to you—there are plenty of options! Take a shorter walk, or spend the night in a tent, at a mountain lodge, or in a hotel bed.

Run – High & Low

TRAIL RUNNING | ÅRE TRAILS

Forget asphalt and uneven cobblestones. Here, we’re talking about running in the mountains. You definitely need to watch your footing, but at the same time, you get to enjoy breathtaking views—and yes, there’s a certain charm in getting a little muddy and wet along the way. Crisp mountain air surrounded by majestic autumnal scenery doesn’t sound too bad, does it?
