Hiking in October

All hiking trails that are part of Åre’s trail system are officially open from Midsummer to the end of September – the same period that the lifts run. In October, the first snow often falls in higher mountain terrain, there may be more rain than otherwise during the year and the ground does not dry up in the same way as in the summer. Therefore, the trails and terrain are generally very wet and nature is extra sensitive to wear. At the same time, the preparations for winter skiing are now starting and the trail markings in the ski system are therefore being taken down. Due to early snowfall or heavy rainfall during the period, it happens that some trails may be closed earlier than planned.

But even during this period there is hiking around Åreskutan. Here are our tips on open trails to hike in October:

Trollstigen – Trail 212

A nice hike that suits both young and old. On signs along the path, Åredalen’s legends and fairy tales are written down, and among the trees, trolls and goblins can hide, so keep your eyes open. The path starts from Åre square and winds sheltered through the forest and follows the upper part of the roaring creek Mörviksån up to Fjällgården.

Find your way: From the square, walk on the left side of the funicular building and after about 100 meters the path goes to the left in the direction of the cable car. When you reach the Timmerstugan restaurant, you will see the signage to the right and the path that winds its way up through the forest.

Tegeforsen falls – Trail 218

An easier walk to the Tegeforsen waterfall, first on asphalt along the old Årevägen and then on a gravel road to the beautiful Tegeforsen rest area with wind shelter and barbecue place. From Åre square you go west on the old road towards Duved. Map and more info >>

Fröåtjärn tarn – Trail 221

After about a 20-minute walk on a gravel road from Björnen along trail 221, you will find the easily accessible mountain tarn Fröåtjärn with a gorgeous view of Mount Åreskutan. Along the shore there is a public barbecue area and you have the possibility of taking a swim. This stretch is a “Share the trail” dirt road, which means that e.g. cyclists, horses, walkers and prams can share the road.

Fröå copper mine – Trail 221

An easy hike of about 1 hour along trail 221 from Björnen’s trail center, past Fröåtjärn and up to the historic copper mining area Fröå Gruva. This stretch is a “Share the trail” on dirt road, which means that e.g. cyclists, horses, walkers and prams share the road. On site there are shorter history walks and a barbecue area with wind protection for a cozy coffee after the tour. It is also possible to park the car at the mine and walk around the area.

Byxtjärn tarn – Trail 221

Popular day trip for big and small hikers. This is an easier mountain hike in lovely mountain surroundings for about 1 hour along trail 221, starting at Fröå mine and finishing at the beautifully situated tarn Byxtjärn where you have a spectacular view over Mount Åreskutan. Ready for a swim?

Torprundan – Trail 224

Torprundan at Fröå Gruva offers both nice forest, open fields, marsh and a splendid view towards Åreskutan. Along the trail there are signs that tell stories from the area around the old mine. Halfway through, you can choose to shorten the round and take the shortcut back to Fröå Gruva. At the mining area there are shorter history walks and a barbecue area with a wind shelter for a cozy coffee after the tour. Start and end point is the parking lot at Fröå Gruva.

Historic houses – Trail 231

A family-friendly walk in central Åre on smooth and flat asphalt and gravel roads. Here you can read more about the tour and download the digital walking guide – there are stories and anecdotes about most of the historic houses in central Åre. There is a short (231) and a slightly longer (231b) tour.

Tips:

  • Download the hiking map as a pdf
  • It can be cold and snowy on the mountains so dress for changing weather
  • It is slippery on the trails so hike in sturdy boots
  • It is wet in the grounds so show extra consideration and protect our nature
  • Pack the rucksack with reinforcements, hot drinks and coffee!
