Ski Areas for Kids in Åre

It’s in the children’s slopes that we lay the foundation for a long and joyful skiing journey – for the whole family. Together you’ll practise on conveyor lifts, button lifts and gentle slopes. It can be hard work at times, but the reward comes when the little skier makes their first independent turns and rides the lift on their own. Here we’ve gathered our tips on all the ski areas for children in Åre – try them out and see which one suits your family best!

Duved Ski Area

PISTE MAP DUVED

The Duved ski area, which is linked with Tegefjäll, lies about 10 km west of Åre village. The pace here is often a little slower and the slopes less crowded. The children’s area is located just above the car park by the Duved chairlift (D3), to the right as you look up towards the slopes. The children’s slope has the perfect gradient and features an easy-to-use conveyor lift. There’s also a button lift (D4) called Torpliften.

Thanks to its position between the Duved chairlift (D3) and Leråliften (D5), the area also offers excellent skiing for more advanced skiers right next to the children’s slope – a clear advantage when families are at different levels or want to take turns in the kids’ area. Leråliften (D5) provides direct access to the gentle, rolling pistes in Tegefjäll. When it’s time to take the next step beyond the children’s area, beginners can practise riding the drag lift at the bottom of Hamreliften (D2), which is the westernmost tow lift in the system.

Getting here

By car: Take the E14 west from Åre village. After about 10 km you’ll reach Duved. The turn-off to the first car park is on the right, just before the exit down to Duved centre – so be ready. Another car park is located below the lift house, also with a right-hand turn-off from the E14 heading west. From here you can easily access the Hamreliften (D2). By bus: Take the ski bus from Åre village or Björnen to Duved.

Facilities

BBQ area: Yes, several options | Warming hut: In the lower floor of the Duved chairlift building. | Toilets: In the lower floor of the Duved chairlift building. | Nearest Eatery: Brödernas by the chairlift.

Tegefjäll Ski area

PISTE MAP TEGEFJÄLL

In Tegefjäll, along the road between Duved and Åre, you’ll find the children’s ski area just below the main road, the E14. The ski bus runs to Tegefjäll from both Duved and Åre, and if you’re driving, the easiest option is to park in the first designated car park on the right, just after crossing the Tegefjäll bridge. From there, head across the ski bridge to the children’s area, where you’ll find a conveyor belt and the Mini Tege (D8) button lift.

Once the children have mastered turning and stopping on their own, it’s time for the Vildmarksstigen themed slope – a magical loop that winds from the top of Tegeliften (D9) through the forest, past carved wooden figures and stories along the way. The run finishes with a red slope, so if your child isn’t quite ready for that challenge, you can guide them between your legs for the final stretch. Alternatively, you can cross to the other side of the chairlift and enjoy a longer run on a blue slope before joining the red section at the end. Check SkiStar’s piste map for more options.

Getting Here

By car: Take the E14 west from Åre village. Park in the first designated car park on the right just after crossing the Tegefjäll bridge. Cross the ski bridge to reach the children’s ski area. By bus: Take the ski bus from Åre village, Duved or Björnen to Tegefjäll.

Facilities

BBQ area: Yes, by the base station of Tegeliften (D9). | Warm-up hut: By the base station of Tegeliften. | Toilet: Dry toilet at the warm-up hut. | Nearest Eatery: Tegetornet at the base station of Tegeliften | Mr Bramwells at the top station.

Rödkullen Ski Area

PISTE MAP RÖDKULLEN

Adjacent to Åre’s central ski system is Rödkullen, which features two children’s areas. The easier, lower area is located below the warm-up hut, right next to the car park, while the upper area is above Restaurant Rautjoxa, just above the warm-up hut. In the lower area, there’s a conveyor belt and a button lift. There’s often a Valle course here for playing and practising slalom, and in the slope nearest the forest by the conveyor, it’s perfect for sledging.

Once your children have outgrown the lower area, the upper area awaits, featuring two slightly longer parallel button lifts. This lift runs through the forest, so it’s not as easy to ski off the slope if you fall. This slope is wide, with a perfect gradient and usually plenty of snow, making it a long-lasting favourite. There’s also a Valleland with forest trails for variety. When it’s time to move on, the right-hand lift at Rödkullen gives access to the green run straight from the lift. You can also take the Rödkullelift all the way to the top and enjoy long, wide turns on the Röde Orm run—just watch out for intersecting pistes.

Getting Here

By car: Take the E14 west from Åre village and turn right at the sign for Rödkullen/Ullådalen. There’s a large car park in Rödkullen directly next to the children’s area, the other lifts, and the warm-up hut. By ski bus: Take the ski bus from Åre village, Björnen, Duved, or Tegefjäll. The fastest route is from Åre village. Via the ski system: Take VM8:an and ski down the connecting slope west towards Rödkullen. Children need to be able to turn and stop on their own, or they can ski between an adult’s legs. Please note that the connecting slope is fairly narrow and can be busy with other skiers.

Facilities

BBQ area: Yes, at both children’s ski areas. | Warm-up hut: At the lower children’s area. | Toilet: Inside the warm-up hut. | Nearest dining options: Holiday Shop in the warm-up hut, Restaurant Rautjoxa between the upper and lower children’s areas.

Björnen Ski Area

PISTE MAP BJÖRNEN

Björnen is located at the eastern end of the Åre ski system, and much of the area is tailored for children. Here you’ll find a play park with lifts and gentle slopes, and in the centre there’s a BBQ area, climbing course, two conveyor lifts, and plenty of other activities to keep kids entertained. There are three easy button lifts for practice before moving on to the longer Vargenliften (B42). At Nalleliften (B45) you’ll find Lilla Björnlandet, a small forest trail with wooden animal figures. Take the left turn at the end of Nalleliften and you’ll often find a little course to try out. At the top of Järvenliften (B44) lies Björnlandet, where children should be able to turn and stop independently. The slope is wide with gentle gradients, many spots to pause, and plenty of places to take children between your legs if needed.

Björnen also offers many blue and green runs directly connected to the children’s area, so kids—and even older beginners—can gradually progress. There are also forest trails for those wanting a little adventure. For older children, there’s a Kids Park in the upper part of Björnen, between Björnenliften (B40) and Vargenliften (B42). The next step is to take the Sadelexpressen (B37) chairlift, which leads to Åre by’s central ski area.

Getting Here

By car: From Åre village, drive east on the E14 towards Björnänge and turn left at the petrol station/Ica Björnänge. There are several car parks in Björnen, but the upper ones, opposite Åre XC Arena, are recommended when it’s busy. By ski bus: The ski bus runs easily from Åre village to Björnen and Sadeln. Via the ski system: Björnen is connected to Åre by via Hermelinenliften (B38) and also via Sadeln, but for the smallest skiers this can be tricky. It’s easiest to start in Björnen to save energy for the rest of the day.

Facilities

BBQ area: Yes, several BBQs by the conveyor lifts and at the bottom of Lokattliften (B41). | Warm-up hut: By Mårdenliften (B43), near Björnen centre | Toilets: In the warm-up hut and at Järvenliften (B44). |  Nearest Eatery: Crowded House serves food in the warm-up hut and also at the top stations of Vargenliften (B42) and Björnenliften (B40).
