Not sure which ski area will be your perfect match, where to park, where to grab a bite, or how to hop on the ski bus? We’ve got you covered – read on and start planning your best days on snow.

Opening Dates & Hours

Åre’s ski area is actually made up of three parts. The largest and most central is Åre by (Åre village), which is directly linked to the family-friendly Björnen ski area. About 6 km to the west lies Tegefjäll, which in turn is connected to Duved, a little further west. Both Duved and Tegefjäll have fewer lifts and slopers than Åre by but offer great skiing, for kids and beginners but also for more advanced skiers.

The winter season starts as soon as there’s enough snow to open up the ski area. Usually, that means end of November, or the start of December. For the 2025/2025 season, the official opening date is December 12th and, unless anything unforeseen happens, the lifts run until May 3, 2026. The lifts in Björnen and Duved/Tegefjäll close in April.

During peak season, the lifts’ opening hours are extended and the upper mountain area usually opens in January, or as soon as there’s enough snow to provide good skiing. Different parts of each ski area might also have other opening hours than those given here. To keep yourself updated and to find out more about opening hours, the ski areas and see the ski area maps and more, please visit the ski are operator Skistar’s website or download the app (see below).

TIP! When on site, it’s useful to have the Skistar app ready on your phone. It allows you to add days to your ski pass, notifies you of any changes in opening hours and other useful information, such as weather warnings.

Ski Passes in Åre

There are several kinds of ski passes available via Skistar’s website and app. You can choose to purchase for a day, for a few days, a week and the whole season. The Skistar All Ski Pass is valid at all Skistar’s destinations such as Vemdalen and Björnrike. Also, if you have a season pass, you may register your vehicle to that ski pass and park for free at Skistar’s parking lots.

You can book and buy your ski pass at the Skistar shops but booking and purchasing your ski pass digitally via the Skistar website or app is encouraged to avoid crowding. Downloading and using the app also allows you to refill you ski pass. Pleas note that you do need a physical ski pass which is a plastic card to be able to refill and you need to enter the ski area lifts. The ski pass gives you access to all the ski areas, meaning you can ski in Åre by, Björnen and Duved/Tegefjäll using the same ski pass. Your ski pass also give you access to the ski bus (see below).

Kids under 7 years of age ski free of charge but only if they are using a helmet which, of course, is highly recommended for all alpine skiers.

The Ski Areas

Åre By (Åre Village)

SKI MAP ÅRE BY

Åre by (Åre village) is the largest of the three ski areas, offering the steepest slopes, the greatest vertical drops, and access to the summit of Mt. Åreskutan at 1,420 metres above sea level. There are several convenient starting points with parking available, and you can also take the ski bus to your chosen lift station – or even reach some of them on foot.

If you cannot use the app, you need to pay at the parking meters or via text message (information available at the parking meters).

If you have a Skistar All Ski Pass which is valid at all Skistar’s destinations, a parking permit is included as long as you have registered your vehicle’s registration number to your ski pass (see the Skistar app). Your ski pass also give you access to the ski bus (see below).

SKI MAP TEGEFJÄLL & DUVED
