Autumn Break Tips
There’s a new adventure just waiting to be had around every corner, indoors and out, for kids of all ages. Apart from the Autumn Break Program activities there are plenty of big and small adventures and activities to go for, with your friends or the whole family. Visit our calendar to discover even more activities beyond the autumn break program.
Snow!
There’s no guarantee, but October often brings the first snowfall of the season. Pack your beanie, mittens, warm layers and sturdy footwear so you’re ready for snowy adventures up high – whether it’s a proper snowball fight, a sledging session or making snow angels.
Don’t touch the ground!
Next to the Holiday Club, you’ll find an obstacle course with a “don’t touch the ground” theme – fun for all ages. It’s a great family challenge, and if you fancy a proper workout, there’s an outdoor gym right beside it.
Dine Alfresco
At the Wilderness Camp, the firewood is stacked, and the campfires burn all day long. Bring your own packed lunch or cook burgers, sausages, chocolate bananas or cinnamon apples over the open flames. Prefer your own quiet spot? You’ll find barbecue areas along Åre’s beach promenade, at the marina and in Björnen. Looking for outdoor cooking inspo? Check out these recipe tips.
Chase the Northern Lights
With dark, crisp nights in October, you might just spot the magical Northern Lights. Keep an eye on local forecasts or book a guided tour for the best chance of catching the aurora in action. Find more tips on how to spot the Northern Lights here.
Bake bread over the campfire
Bring ready-made dough or make your own before heading to one of Åre’s campfire spots. Baking bread over the glowing embers takes a little patience, but the reward is well worth it. Enjoy it with butter, cinnamon and sugar, or tuck a piece of chocolate inside and let it melt into a delicious treat.
You’ll find recipes and baking here. Easily accessible campfire areas are located along the lakeside promenade, while those looking for a little adventure will find plenty of scenic fire pits in the mountains, where the views are just as memorable as the meal.
Take a short—or long—hike in the mountains
Autumn Break is the perfect time to explore the mountains. Choose a shorter walk with the little ones or head out on a longer hike if you’ve got the energy. Pack a backpack with snacks or a picnic and enjoy the crisp mountain air, breathtaking views, and landscapes that shift from vibrant fall colors to the season’s first snowfall. With trails for every age, ability, and ambition, there’s something for everyone.
Find trail suggestions on the digital trail map, Åre Trails.
Visit a Waterfall
Fans of Ronja the Robber’s Daughter will love this – her waterfall, Glupafallet, is real and called Ristafallet. It’s an ideal day trip with trails for exploring the area. If size impresses you, Tännforsen – Sweden’s largest waterfall – is a must-see, along with other stunning falls around Åre.
Hot chocolate tastes better outdoors
There’s something special about a cup of hot chocolate after spending time in the crisp mountain air. Bring a thermos on your hike or gather around a campfire and warm your hands around your mug. Top it with whipped cream or a handful of marshmallows for an extra cozy treat.
Start your own campfire
Did you learn how to light a fire with a fire steel at the Wilderness Camp? Now it’s time to try it for yourselves! Bring hot dogs, bread dough for the campfire, or simply a thermos of coffee and enjoy a relaxing break around the fire. Few things are better than gathering around a crackling campfire in the crisp autumn air.
Jump into a pile of leaves
One of autumn’s simplest pleasures! Find a big pile of leaves and dive right in. Rake up an even bigger pile, jump in again, and see who can send the most leaves flying. Sometimes the simplest games turn out to be the most fun.
Go cross-country skiing
typically keeps its early-season cross-country ski trails open throughout Autumn Break, using snow preserved from the previous winter. If you’re lucky, Sweden’s national cross-country ski team may be training there, giving you the chance to spot Ebba Andersson and some of the country’s top skiers in action.
After your ski, reward yourself with a hearty lunch or the popular waffle buffet at the mountain station restaurant
Even more autumn fun
Beyond all this, don’t miss Åre’s Autumn Break Program, (will be published shorty after summer) the Calendar and What’s On listings – packed with daily events and activities from morning to night.
