At Åre’s best swimming spots, you can dip your toes or take a full plunge to cool off on warm, sunny summer days, or awaken your senses with a truly bracing experience in the winter months, all without the crowds. If you’re not a fan of sand between your toes or unpredictable water temperatures, there are also excellent indoor options. Welcome to the best swimming spots in Åre!

You’ll never regret taking the plunge – whether it’s a dip in an icy hole in the winter, braving the waves in autumn, or those hottest days in Åre when the entire valley seems to be basking in the sun. A refreshing swim in a mountain lake or tarn filled with meltwater is the perfect reward after a day of hiking, running or cycling. And a trip to one of Åre’s best beaches is an adventure, whether you’re with family, friends, or simply enjoying some me-time with a book or a podcast.

Please Note

  • Some of the outdoor swimming spots listed below have no facilities such as toilets or eateries. Bring your own food (and bring your waste, including left-overs, back with you, and make sure that you know how to do your business outdoors. This is especially important near water as there’s a risk that the water might be contaminated if it’s not done properly. Learn how to go to the toilet outdoors here.
  • Parking near popular swimming spots such as Grundsviken or Ottsjö Strandbad might fill up fast on a beautiful day. Please pay attention to how you park so that 1. as many as possible fit into the allotted parking spaces and 2. so that your vehicle doesn’t hinder traffic or rescue personell in case of emergency.
  • Leave the beach or swimming spot as you’d like to find it: Clean and tidy.

Outdoor Swimming

 

Åre Beach

In central Åre

On Holiday Club’s seaside, you’ll find the nearest beach in Åre village. It’s a sandy beach with easy access to ice cream and cafés. There are bins, benches and barbecue spots available. The water is shallow, making it easier for the little ones to take a dip with some help. Water shoes are recommended.

The Marina

In central Åre

From Årevägen, turn off over the road bridge towards Holiday Club (near Coop and Systembolaget). Just to the left after the bridge, you’ll find the path leading to Åre Beach and to the marina as well as the skate park. You can swim from the beach, which is often slightly warmer as the marina lies in a bay, or from the jetties. There’s also a large wooden deck for sunbathers, and barbecue spots. Toilets are available at JumpYard, which bathers are welcome to use. If you arrive by car, you can park to the right of the road near JumpYard (subject to parking fees).

Nulltjärnarna

This spot is truly at the end of the road, past Vålådalen. It’s a cosy, sandy beach with a bit more comfort, featuring a designated barbecue area and an outhouse. By car, drive east on the E14 from Åre, turn right in Undersåker and cross the bridge towards Vålådalen. Continue straight along the gravel road until you find the spot.

Ullån

Ullån is practically a natural waterpark. The water can be quite cold, but on warm summer days, it’s perfect for cooling off and offers fun for both adults and children. You’ll find naturally carved pools (usually a bit warmer), rushing mini waterfalls, and rocks smoothed into natural slides. No facilities available.

Ottsjö Strandbad

Beautiful Ottsjö is surrounded by mountains and forests, offering a top-notch Swedish swimming experience. Drive east from Åre, turn off at Undersåker, cross the bridge and head towards Vålådalen. Just after the bridge crossing Storån, you can park on the left-hand side of the road. From there, it’s about 200 metres down to the beach. There’s also a barbecue area and an outhouse here.

Helgesjön

Here the sand is black and a touch rough, and you can swim with a view of Åreskutan, surrounded by forest. From Åre, drive along the E14 towards Järpen and turn off at Slagsån. Look out for a sign to Helgesjön in the forest and park sensibly when you arrive. No facilities available.

Hensjön, Edsåsdalen

Hensjön in Edsåsdalen has a barbecue area, an outhouse, and a large swimming jetty with ladders. From the far end of Edsåsdalen village, you’ll find a gravel road, and about 1.5 km along that road, you’ll reach Hensjön. There’s also a small sandy beach with shallow water.

Storgrundsviken / Grundsviken

This is a long and lovely sandy beach by Lake Kall (Kallsjön), with views of the beautiful Kallsbygden. Take the E14 from Åre and turn up towards Björnen, then continue towards Huså. Shortly after you turn left from Fröåvägen, towards Huså, you’ll see the beach on the right-hand side of the road. No facilities available.

Holiday Club at Åre Beach offers swimming for children of all ages, and of course for grown-up children who either want to tackle the waterslides and currents or take it easy in the jacuzzi. Here you’ll find everything from a lap pool to a children’s pool, as well as a heated outdoor pool for year-round swimming.

 

Copperhill Spa

Åre Björnen

The spa at Copperhill Mountain Lodge has two indoor pools and one outdoor pool for those who are keen. This is swimming with a view – and then some. As it’s in the spa area, it’s mostly about relaxing dips here; for more adventurous swimming, the option above is recommended.

 

Quieter Alternatives – Spa & Relax
