Searching for conference activities in Åre during winter? Then here is a good read. It’s no secret that winter in Åre is magical – from fluffy snow in December till Spring’s rejuvenating sunshine. Skiing, snowmobiling over magnificent expanses, ice bathing and searching for Aurora Borealis are only a few examples of activities to help strengthen team spirit and create memories for life. Here are our 16 best activity tips for your conference.
Take a journey through snow-covered forests and magnificent mountain landscapes where the only thing heard is the edge of the sled gliding through the snow, the whistling wind, and the bark of eager dogs. Evening tours, two-hour tours, dinner tours or longer overnight tours. Follow along with or try to run the team yourself. Dog sledding is a real bucket list experience!
Backcountry ski touring slowly in the mountains through Åre’s fabulous winter landscape will leave no one cranky. A quick break for a cup of steaming hot chocolate will guarantee a smile on everyone’s face.
If you’re looking for more speed under your feet, then cross-country skiing is what you should be doing. Åre XC Arena has freshly prepared cross-country tracks and with the help of an instructor you can learn some great skiing techniques. Who knows, after a bit of practice you might be ready to challenge each other in an internal Swedish Vasaloppet?
A quiet activity is ice fishing – however, we can’t guarantee your pulse won’t rise when you find a large fish on the end of your hook. Otherwise, it’s a harmonious experience to sit on an icy lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, chat, drink coffee and reel in the occasional fish. Which one of you in the office takes home the glorious title of “Fisherman of the year”?
Åre has been a health resort since the 19th century when guests came here to soak up the clean air and take a break from the cities’ industrialization, stress, and everyday life. This has not changed throughout time. Guests still come to Åre to breathe fresh mountain air, enjoy fantastic views and be active. After a few hours outdoors, our best tip is to check in on one of Åre’s spas – take a few laps in the pool, enjoy a treatment or two or relax in a steaming sauna. Relaxation, energy rejuvenation and general well-being – a guaranteed winning activity!
A perfect way to experience nature with an activity that suits everyone. Head out on a tranquil walk-through mighty spruce forests and over snow-covered mountains with miles of endless views. Hear the snow crack beneath your feet and soak up the fresh cool air. Take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee cooked over an open fire.
Åre is Scandinavia’s largest and best ski resort and it’s for this reason that skiing should definitely be on your activities schedule. You’ll find both green, blue, red, and black slopes. Parks, forests, high alpine terrain, button lifts, tow lifts, chair lifts and gondolas all topped off with a cable car. Whether it’s your first time on skis, you are stoked for off-piste or maybe want to learn how to snowboard…With a ski guide or ski instructor, your group will be able to make the most of their days on the slopes.
Our favourite tip is morning skiing. Imagine 1-2 hours of skiing before everyone else. No queues, no other guests – just you and newly groomed slopes. Just might be the best way to kick off a conference day!
A fun and comfortable way to get out and experience the mountains is with a snowmobile. Take a trip through winding snowmobile trails over magnificent plains surrounded by snow-covered forests – the feeling of freedom is enormous. A lunch stop to enjoy a traditional Swedish “kolbulle” fried over an open fire or a hardier meal at one of the mountain restaurants before continuing on your journey through the beautiful winter landscape.
Åre’s activity companies offer snowmobile tours with slightly different options. Everything from two hours to a full day or even two days with an overnight stay in a mountain station.
A rally track is ploughed on the ice of Lake Åresjön during the winter for an activity that’ll set your adrenaline on fire. It’s not just speed you’ll find here, with Ice Driving Challenge’s experienced instructors you’ll learn the art of braking, steering, and cornering techniques. All of which will enhance your abilities as a safer and more secure driver. For an extra adrenaline kick, add a competition element – who in the office can make the fastest lap around the track?
Winter bathing has spiked as a popular activity to promote health and well-being. For a safe experience, this bathing ritual takes place with a guide and starts with controlled breathing and yoga to get in touch with your mind and body, then it’s time to slide down into the ice and master the cold. Afterwards, a relaxing moment awaits you in the wood-fired sauna.
It’s a breath-taking feeling to fly between treetops, feel the wind in your hair and the adrenaline tickling your stomach. A zipline is a pulley suspended on a wire mounted high up on a slope. This zipline runs high above the swirling river Susabäcken where you’ll sit securely fastened in a harness with a helmet on your head. Choose between two different courses, one black for the daredevils and one green for those who want a slightly kinder ride.
Crispy waffles topped with cream and cloudberry jam always taste better during a winter day in the mountains. It’s even more luxurious to make them yourself over an open fire in the forest. So, take a break and get out in the fresh air for a while – there’s no better afternoon break!
Just like in the Alps but in Åre! At the foot of the backside of Mt. Åreskutan lies Skiers Hütte – a cosy and welcoming Swiss style cabin. With a cheerful crackling fire, tables are adorned with red and white checkered tablecloths and of course cheese fondue on the menu.
Enjoy the terrace during the sunny days of early spring – it’s the ultimate place for your own après-ski. Arrive at the cabin by skis, snowshoes, or snowmobile.
There are no less than four microbreweries in our small valley – a heaven for beer lovers. Åre Ölfabrik is housed in the cellar of the gastro pub Parkvillan and offers a number of different tastings. Choose between tasting menus with selected beers from their own brewery, beer tastings of local varieties or pay a visit to Åre Bryggcompagni and see how the production is done.
Strap on your snowshoes and join us at night for a walk among snow-dressed spruces lit by headlamps. Take a seat on a reindeer hide and enjoy a cup of coffee around a crackling fire while learning about the natural phenomenon Aurora Borealis. And if the weather gods permit it during your stay, you’ll have the chance to experience the awe-inspiring northern lights that you might otherwise have only seen in pictures. See the green lights dance melodically across the sky, changing colour, sweeping back and forth, fading, and flaming over and over before disappearing. It’s quite simply an unbeatable experience.
Both Tännforsen and Ristafallet are really powerful waterfalls to visit during the winter. The falls become enchanting ice creations and ice caves are formed behind Ristafallet which you can visit during a guided tour with JoPe Fors & Fjäll. Next to the waterfall lies a crackling fire waiting patiently with a simmering pot of coffee and freshly baked goods.
Early spring is one Åre’s most beautiful seasons and is known here as our fifth season – “vårvinter” (spring winter). The days are longer, the temperature is more pleasing, and the sunshine heats up your face as the snow turns into soft sorbet gliding cheerfully from the rooftops. Move your conference room to a sun pit on the ski slopes. Spread out some reindeer hides, light the grill and enjoy a cold one. We promise your creativity will flow!
In addition to these, there are a number of other experiences and classic team building activities such as pentathlon in the mountains, build your own toboggan and host your own Åre Winter Games. Contact one of Åre’s activity companies listed below for more information regarding tailored experiences.
