Autumn holiday in Åre
Celebrating the October autumn holiday in Åre is fun for the whole family, young and older. The motto for the autumn holiday period is family time together and the Åre community does our utmost to fill the whole village with activities and coziness. All of Åre and the surrounding area offer activities to try, from early season cross-country skiing in the neighboring village Vålådalen, candle casting in Undersåker to climbing in Duved.

Activities
Around the whole village Åre you will find lots of fun activities. The autumn holiday program extends far beyond the village with, for example, cross-country skiing in the neighboring village Vålådalen, candle-casting in Undersåker and climbing in Duved.
The mountain, biking, hiking & weather
The autumn holidays take place during a crisp period between the colorful autumn and the sparkling white winter. The autumn darkness, the temperature and the calm settle over the valley and there is endless time for family snuggles, crackling campfires and experiences in nature.
The lifts are closed during this period, but the XC bike trails in the Åre Bike Park Trail in Björnen are open for mountain biking all of October. Some of the official hiking trails are usually open but there is a risk of snowfall during October so keep an eye on the weather forecast when planning activities during this period. Here we suggest some trails that can still be hiked – both down in the valley and a bit up on the mountain.
The weather is variable, and we cannot guarantee it, but as said, we often get the first long-awaited snowfall during the autumn holidays. Imagine being able to go sledding and throw the first snowball of the year?! We recommend to pack a hat, gloves, warm clothes and sturdy shoes as many activities take place outdoors.
Travel to Åre – by train, plane or car
It is easy and convenient to travel by train to Åre – from both Stockholm and Gothenburg there are direct day and night trains that stop in the middle of the village. Norrtåg runs several daily trains on the route Sundsvall-Åre. Book your train ticket at SJ.
There are two airports within two hours transfer. One hour by car to the east is Åre Östersund Airport with domestic flights from Stockholm and other Swedish airports as well as international flights. Two hours to the west, in Norway, lies Trondheim Airport Værnes with several daily international and domestic flights. You can find direct flights to and from Vaernes here.
On location in Åre, you can reach the activities that take place in the village on foot. But if you want, for example, to go cross-country skiing in Vålådalen, visit Åre Chocolate Factory or make candles at Åre Ljusfabrik, you need to go by car or bus. Here are some examples of tours to do a little outside the village:
🚙 Watch how glass is made at the glass works in Duved
🚙 Go to Ullådalen to do the ghost walk and have a meal at Buustamon
🚙 Go to Vålådalen for cross-country skiing and waffles
🚙 Make a tour and do pony riding at Åre Riding Club and cast candles in Undersåker
The local bus traffic is run by Länstrafiken and you find their time tables here. Some of the guided tours in the autumn holiday program include transportation from and to Åre village.
